Nearby Kapolei & North Shore

If you want to explore beyond the Ko Olina Resort, there are lots of things to see and do.  Listed below are some of our favorites (& links to their web sites).

  • Ride the only active historical Hawaiian Railroadon Oahu.  Departs from historic Ewa town where you can also tour the various train displays.  This is the same train that you will see crossing through the resort, however it does not stop at the resort.

  • Ko Olina's location makes it a quick drive up to the surfing mecca known as the North Shore.  On the way there, stop at Dole Plantation or drive directly to historic Hale'iwa Town -- there's quaint shops, restaurants and the legendary Mastsumoto Shave Ice shop. Further past Hale'iwa is beautiful Waimea Valley  where you can hike trails or take a walk through tropical botanical gardens to see the falls.

  • Or continue on hwy 83 to Laie to experience Polynesia at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

In and Around Honolulu

Here are some of our favorite museums and tours.

Pearl Harbor is rich in historical significance and a must see.  In addition to the memorial, also worth a visit are the Pacific Air Museum and Missouri tours.

For a change of pace, in downtown Honolulu you can tour the only royal residence in the USA at Iolani Palace.  Walking distance from the palace you can visit the historic Mission Houses Museum and learn about the islands' missionary settlers.  Also downtown is the Bishop Museum and well worth a visit.

Shangri La, the estate belonging to the late tobacco heiress Doris Duke, is open for public tours, see her collection of art and the spectacular scenic views.  All tours originate and end at Honolulu Museum of Art  which is Hawaii's premier art museum and worth a visit even if you do not take the Shangri La tour.  They also have a fabulous gift shop and a surprisingly exceptional museum cafe.

Visit Queen Emma's Summer Palace; keep driving up the Pali Hwy to see the stunning panoramic views of the windward coast from the Pali Lookout.

Shopping / Dining
Located within a couple of miles from the resort is the town of Kapolei (exit #1 from the H-1) where you'll find the nearest COSTCO, Target, Starbucks, markets (Foodland, Safeway), restaurants, fast food places, fuel and more.   Kapolei also offers various dining options at much lower prices than in the resort--our favorite breakfast place is the KOA Pancake House.

In Waikele (exit #7 from the H-1) there's a PREMIUM Outlet mall.

Drive into Honolulu and Waikiki and you'll find world class shopping and a myriad of restaurants at the Ala Moana Center, Ward Center, the Aloha Tower Marketplace or just take in the sights & shops with a stroll down Lewers Street Waikiki Beach Walk.

There are also a lot of great local shops most everywhere on the island and are part of the fun of exploring.
